Hi, my name is Linda Kay and I want to tell you a story that has changed the lives of thousands of my students for the better. You see I grew up as a government brat moving from country to country with my parents. As a child I didn't have many friends. When we would settle down it would be only a few months before my father who was a diplomat with the US consulate would be re-stationed and we would be uprooted and moved to another country.
This would have been much harder on me if not for one friend Stacy who was also in the same diplomatic program as my family. We could share our similar stories and count on the fact that at least our paths would cross from time to time. As we grew older we sometimes worked at the same job opportunities provided for teen children of diplomats within the state department and finally we both attended and graduated from the American International University.
Those were good years but I lost track of Stacy for almost a two decades while pursuing my own family and business career although as you will see our paths would cross again. As I became more engaged in business life and as our company grew I had the opportunity to attend a Christmas celebration sponsored by one of our sister divisions in the United States.
It was at this party that I ran into Stacy. Now twenty years older both she and I had been married and raised children then gone back to work. Most astonishingly we had even chosen to work for the same company albeit on different continents. We had grown up so much the same it seemed that we had chosen the same path as a result.
But there was one quite substantial difference between us. You see while Stacy had worked hard to become a successful department manager for our company, I was the company President and CEO. The keynote speaker at the event.
How could two people walk down the same path and yet arrive at such different stations in life? What was the deciding factor that led two people so much alike to such divergent outcomes and incomes? In a word, Information...
